Mother's Day Running

Baby H. contemplating Mother's Day 2011 gift.
Waking up on Sunday morning, I remember where I was two years ago on Mother's day. It was May 9 and I was just a few short days away from my due date (May 12). But apparently a due date is just a rough (very rough) estimate of when your little one will appear since Baby H. didn't deem to be born for 15 more days. Maybe if I had gone for a six mile run on Mother's Day 2010, I wouldn't have had to suffer those last two weeks.

Like all Mother's Day's ought to be, the weather was perfect. After a nice brunch with my mother and Mr. H.'s mother, we put Baby H. down for a nap and headed out. Like most of my outside runs lately, I'm not sure how I'm going to complete the mileage, or how quickly I'll be doing it, so I just go and hope for the best. My best was a time just over 1 hour (by 7 seconds), so right where I like to be for a "leisurely" run. I did manage to get almost all my runs in this week, but skipped Saturday because it seemed like a good day to take a rest. So I did some yoga instead. Even though the last mile of yesterday's run way my quickest of the run, it was the most painful because I'm having an issue with my right foot. I'm going to switch to my old running shoes to see if that solves the problem, and if not, I guess it's in to the doctor or chiropractor or something to see what's going on. I'm pretty sure I'm due for at least a massage.

C4 Miles

Several weeks ago, Amy from knitting told my sister and me about a run her organization, Community Counseling Centers of Chicago, was having a race and since we were runners, we should do it and help eliminate the stigma of mental illness. Since I'll all about running and mental illness, I said sure.

Then last Monday, said sister reminded me that the C4 Miles was this upcoming Sunday. Great I thought. I just did a race last weekend. And I was supposed to run 6 miles on Sunday, not 3. Well, not to worry, the race distance was actually 4 miles (C4 Miles makes a lot more sense now) and since that was the distance I needed to run on Saturday, I could just switch my days. No problem.

Except I had another one of those weeks. If anything happens mid-week, an appointment, a bad day, my whole schedule gets thrown off. I'll spare you the specifics, but let's just say I ran Tuesday, skipped Wednesday and Thursday, and despite my best intentions and even telling Mr. H. that I needed to do a 6 mile run on Saturday, didn't do that either. To make matters worse, we went out on Saturday night and even though I was in bed by midnight, getting up at 7 a.m. to run 4 miles just wasn't sounding that attractive...but I did it anyway.

It was a nice jog down the lakefront path, something I haven't done in a while. And it was actually sunny for a bit of it (though it proceeded to rain the rest of the day). My overall time was 39.09 and I finished 6th in my age group. I finished 88th overall. Not too bad for a less than stellar week. I didn't break any land-speed records (mine or otherwise), but I at least managed to get a run in on the weekend.

The even better news is that sister finished in 34:17, winning her age group. Very exciting!
